How NOT to use a bike.

This came across our instructor's e-mail list. Since this is a blog about riding to work, riding for work, and using a motorcycle for everyday transportation, it seemed like just the thing to share here. First off, the photo.

The caption for the photo was "Desk Jockey". I would not recommend this as a way to ride for work. Upon closer examination the object turns out to be a bar-b-que grill of sorts. Even then, this is not the way to do mobile catering.

As to credits for the photo, it has been around a while. The instructor who posted it saw it here.

This is the forum for Pacific Northwest riders. I'm happy to say that we finally got the technical difficulties sorted out and I can now post on this forum. Time for some Winter Tag!

Inquiry was made of the poster. Here is the reply.

Re: Biker with desk

I'm not sure. I'm always searching for funny pictures. I have a couple hundred saved on my computer. I post random 'caption this' pictures every day on another forum, everyone there loves it. Sometimes I find them on websites or blogs, other times I just do a google search for "funny" this or that. I don't remember where that particular one came from.

Turns out this photo has, indeed, been around a while. Here is an earlier posting.

The bottom line is that I'm not sure who to credit for the photo. I just want to make clear that it is not of my originality and is probably considered in the public domain by now. If it's your photo, please feel free to claim it here.

As for the rest of us, it might be fun to offer alternate captions. Go for it but keep it "G" rated, please!

Miles and smiles,

Dan

Glad to hear you'll be on PNWRiders. I hang out on the "eastside" forum for Washington. A great site full of slightly wonky people. :)

Don't know how to caption this. Definitely unsafe though.

For the first 30 miles Dan thought he had made a clean getaway; little did he know the "look twice, save a steer" posse were closing in driving a dark sedan.

I believe that is a photo from Aussie (it made the news here in NZ) of some nut transporting his barbeque by bike. Totally nuts!

An Australian picture, but a Kiwi rider ! From a newspaper report in Feb '08

"BURNING down the freeway at 100km/h this motorcycle rider risked his licence going up in smoke so he could throw a snag on the barbie on Australia Day.

Photographed riding on Melbourne's Eastern Freeway with a barbecue strapped to his body, this motorcyclist has admitted it wasn't such a bright idea.

And "Stuart" is also having second thoughts about an earlier incident when he hauled a two-seater couch on his motorbike.

"I do think it was dangerous," he said yesterday.

"I don't think I'll carry anything but a pillion passenger from now on."

Stuart, 27, who didn't want his real name revealed, was ridiculed when the Herald Sun published a photo yesterday of his barbecue escapade.

An astonished motorist had snapped him while he was transporting the barbecue on the Eastern Freeway on Sunday evening.

Police were not impressed and started an investigation.

Stuart, who migrated from New Zealand in August, said he picked up the barbecue left on a nature strip for a hard rubbish collection.

A Buddhist, he had been returning home from a temple in Box Hill.

"I've been known to be a bit strange and to see things differently," he said.

"It was the challenge (of transporting the barbecue) more than the thing itself."

But Stuart didn't count on the reaction of work and housemates who teased him after recognising the rider in the photo. "I wouldn't do it again, it was too embarrassing," he said.

Stuart said he recently ferried a couch on his bike from Keilor Downs to his Sydenham flat. "People say it can't be done, but I proved them wrong," he said.

Stuart's housemates said they weren't too surprised when they saw yesterday's photo in the Herald Sun.

"He does some crazy things, it's something that he would do," said one housemate."

Eitherway the picture has been round the world and back again in various 'look at this idiot' postings.

"It beats meeting the grill of a car."

And as for transporting odd things, I've seen (either in person or pictures) Karl carry: recliner, bicycle, 3x6' ramp, and that's just on 2 wheels! I've given up trying to second-guess what he can fit in the sidecar. Using just the sidecar frame (no tub) he's even carried motorcycles.

David,

"Wonky" is just my style! I'll be looking for you.

Dave, aka Old F,

Wow. That opens a lot of possibilities. What if it were natural fertilizer, if you know what I mean?

Take care,

Dan

Conchscooter,

Time to wick up the throttle and get away. There's a lot at "steak" here, it seems.

Andrew,

Looking at it another way, it could also serve as good protection for the ride home in the dark. Let's see a 'roo get through this thing!

Take care,

Dan

Young Dai,

I'm not sure how you tracked this down, but it is neat to hear the whole story. Thank you for the article. One does have to wonder just what goes on in those temples, though.

Reading this, I think, "there, but for the grace of God, go I". I've had similar reactions when somebody told me it can't be done!

Krysta,

Very funny. You should be grilled about your sanity!

As for Karl, maybe he and I should attend therapy together. All of a sudden I have all these great photo possibilities jumping around in my head!

Take care,

Dan

I could spin you a yarn of how I was able to identify the Southern Hemisphere location from the angle of the sun and the cars in the surrounding traffic.

The truth is I came across the story in a UK forum last year. It made me laugh so much I now use the picture as one of my Atavars.

Obviously it is not only Redneck's who find themselves standing in line at the Pearly Gates having just said : "Hey watch this" !

Stupid is as Stupid Does !

BTW : Is there going to be a part 2 to the story of Ron the Teddy Bear ? Or was his willingness to take his course, sitting on a Trail Bike, AGATTed up, the end of it ?

Young Dai,

I'll have to try to track Ron down and see how it's going. I hadn't planned on a followup but why not?

Conchscooter,

On the internet we could write our own story, too. Who would know the difference?

Dave,

Yes, the truth hit like a slap in the face, didn't it?

Take care,

Dan
