How quickly things change!

Yesterday I wrote about riding in hundred degree weather. Today it's barely seventy degrees. I was jarred out of sleep in the wee hours of the morning by booming thunder. There's heavy rain heading our way. Not tropical storm and hurricane amounts like Fay's bringing, but a lot for this time of year. The weather guy on channel 6 is calling it a summer soaker. This is an older picture I dug out. Things may look like this tomorrow.

There was an interview with someone on the news tonight. She said that between 6 PM last night and 6 AM this morning there were something like 5400 lightning strikes in Oregon. How do they count these things? Anyway, she also said there were hundreds of fire starts in the mountains and Central Oregon. Where there are usually about 10 hotshot fire crews, around 30 are deploying.

Interesting how tings change so quickly, isn't it?

I've added a weather bug here. Thought it might be cool for readers to see current weather conditions and the forecast. I chose this one because it doesn't have ads like some others do. My goal is to keep this site commercial free. Just my choice, no insult meant to those who are making a little money from their blogs.

Speaking of blogs, I'm seeing some changes out there. Blogs are being udated to the newer templates. Interesting coincidence on the timing, though! Is there some sort of fever bounding through the internet waves?

Anyway, this has to be quick as there are pressing things to attend to. I've spent some time behind the scenes today making fixes to the site. Some of the links got left out and I've put them back. There was no intent to cut you all out of here! I've also played with some fonts and colors. Little by little, you know.

Miles and smiles,

Dan

  1. Still hot but very windy over here. Although we have had a relatively mild summer this year in Eastern Washington, the heat for the past week or so has been pretty stifling.

I'm looking forward to the cooler riding weather forcast for this week, even if it means getting wet. It's been a couple of months since that has happened as well.

  2. What they do is they have a dude sitting out with a pencil and every time he sees a flash he makes a hash mark.."5399, 5400!" Sorry, I'm just a bit giddy. I hate lightning. I like your new look though.

  3. Just noticed you are in Albany, OR. Just went through there a couple of weeks ago visiting family in Corvallis. Small world.

  4. Shifts in the weather have been gradual here, and occasional summer soakers. They aren't bad to ride in. The heavier rains, gully washers and toad stranglers, are another story. Visibility is worse than fog with the added hazard of sudden big areas of water on the road. It can swamp a Vespa if you aren't careful...

You're blog is looking nicer and nicer. I feel guilty after I look at it that I have never upgraded my template since I started blogging.

  5. I like the new look of your blog! As far as the weather goes, weird is all I can say. I got caught in a hail storm on the way home from work yesterday morning and dumb ol' me didn't have my full face helmet on at the time. It felt like getting stung by a thousand bees in the face! I could have pulled over somewhere and waited but I toughed it out since I was only about 5 miles from home.

Lightning Strike Counter -Now that's a job I would like! Nice work if you can get it I guess!

  7. Earl,
Look at it as a great chance to wash the dust off the bike!

    Conchscooter,
That makes sense except if there's a lot of tourists around. Then how does he know if it's lightning or a camera flash?

    Richard,
I'm finding that we're all a pretty mobile bunch. Never know where we'll be! I'm headed to Northern Idaho in about three weeks, myself.

    Steve W,
I'll bet you could bury a Vespa pretty deep in a puddle! Thanks for the comments on the blog. It's been a challenge switching over because so many things don't automatically go to the new template. That means running it down, installing new html code, etc. Yikes!

    Kano,
I wonder if lightning strike counters get hazard pay.

    Stacy,
    Thank you very much!

Not quite as dramatic a change in the weather as you describe, but I've been riding to work the past 2 days (I'm a teacher and justed started back), and it has been just above 60 degrees in the morning and pushing 90 degrees in the afternoon. My bike is brand new and I have nowhere to carry any gear at this point so it is quite a challenge deciding what jacket to wear! I don't have an option for switching off mid-day, so I've been wearing my mid-range jacket. Close the vents, velcro the sleeve ends tight, and shiver a lot in the morning...open everything up and sweat like crazy in the afternoon! At least it has stayed sunny and dry...(knock on wood)!

    Bungees.
Get the ones with plastic hooks, or at the least the plastic-coated ones, and get creative about where to hook them on the bike.
You'll be amazed at what you find you can carry, even just across the back seat.

There is no back seat, Krysta!

Remember when we used to listen to AM on the radio dial? For me, it seemed like anytime there was a thunder storm east of the Mississippi the box would start cracking away mercelessly. Made listening to the ballgame difficult.

Somehow I suspect counting the lighning stikes involves someone geting paid to listen to a ballgame :-) (although, these days, I'm sure its really a computer).
