Cinnamon rolls and sporting goods.

Sometimes you just get hungry for something. When you have a little sunshine peeking out between the clouds and a motorcycle it doesn't matter if that certain something is an hour away. So we set out to satisfy the cravings. Riding and eating. What more could you want?

Katie and I were hungry for cinnamon rolls. We tried the frozen kind you bake yourself. No good. I could have made some but that would mean being inside all afternoon. Why do that when you can ride a motorcycle to a place that makes good rolls? Not just any place, mind you? We were after Cinnabon rolls. Valley River Center in Eugene has the only one I know of within 50 miles of us.

We got our rolls. As the true prince I am, I gave Katie the heart of mine. The really gooey, sweet part. Have to pamper a wonderful partner, you know.

Anyway, this really isn't about the cinnamon rolls even though I'm quite enjoying the memory. This is a follow-up to a previous conversation. Where in Springfield is the new Cabela's store going in?

After the rolls I added a bit of preload to Elvira's suspension and we headed to the Target store at Gateway Mall. There I saw it. So now we know.

This spot used to be occupied by Ashley Furniture. I had noticed the space being empty for quite a while. Here's the construction outside the mall.

At this point it doesn't look like the store will be as large as the free standing ones. Still great to see it coming, though!

Miles and smiles,

Dan

  2. Good one Dan, and excuse for a ride I say.

  3. They may have to expand well into the parking lot to match the typical supersized store. But hanging around a Cabelas has fewer calories than a Cinnabun. Just leave your wallet outside.

  4. I am so much more comfortable at Cabella's than at REI. I introduced Heather to Cabella's a couple weeks ago. She was raised in a rural area as I was and we both just felt a little bit more at home.

I don't think there is a Cinnabon's here, but we do have some killer kolaches.

  5. Allen,

I totally agree. Much more fun to browse sporting goods than dining room tables. On the other hand, not many people can dine around a boat paddle!

    Raftnn,

Exactly. Any excuse for a ride. If it involves sweet treats so much the better.

    Richard,

The last Cabela's I was in had a restaurant that sold big juicy hamburgers and stuff. All the more reason to padlock the wallet shut.

Oh, you meant not being tempted to buy OTHER stuff. The secret is to ride a motorcycle with no tail trunk or tank bag. You can only purchase what will fit on the bike otherwise.

I agree with you. There is an REI that I stop by once in a while. It's in a college town. I'm much more redneck than preppie.

Did you mean your kolache filled pastries are killer as in really good, or something to be wary of? I'm presuming the former. :)

    Take care,

    Dan

  7. Irondad:

Up here we don't have any Cabella's, nor do we have any REI's, but there are a few Cinnabons but I don't know where they are. We go to Tim Horton's for their soup, but sorry, only in Canada, EH !

  9. Cinnabons aren't bad, but I like Country Bakery on Peoria Road for cinnamon rolls!

Cabela's here this spring? Cool! There are only a few stores I enjoy visiting, and I get the feeling this will be one of them.

I like REI, But I really miss GI Joes!

Cinnamon Rolls and Sporting good stores...some of the good things in life :)

  10. We have a Cabelas in Pennsylvania but I've never visited instead draining my credit limit on their Web site. It's about 130 miles from here. Much closer to Jack Riepe. He probably eats eggs and elk steaks for breakfast there.

Katie must read your blog. Why else would you go to such great lengths to paint yourself so gallantly?? Surrendering the gooey center. What's next?

Glad to see the freezing fog hasn't got you or Elvira. As I was going through your posts (I've not read much of anything lately) I was nervous looking at the frost covered road. Not sure what has happened to me but I have not felt much like venturing forth in the snow even with new snow tires on the Vespa.

Must be some sort of cold triggered coward virus going around...

  11. Dear IronDad:

I am off the Cinnabon's indefinitely. The last one I had expanded my already ample ass by two feet. There is a major Cabella's about 62 miles from here, in Hamburg, Pa. It's one of those places where they have a mountan in the middle of it, covered with one stuffed mammal of every species.

I love it. They have a firearms department that is amazing. I looked at a Browning Renaissance, 9mm pistol there last month. It was on sale for $3,400 bucks.

    Fondest regards,

  12. I was in Eugene Wednesday and checked out Cabela's. Another reason to look forward to spring.
